History

Our history shows some staggering gaps. If you have more info, please contact our historian Koen Alexander.

1968 - The year Ultimate Frisbee was invented

1969-1979 - The years we were ignorant about the existence of Ultimate Frisbee

1979 - The year the NFB (Dutch Frisbee Association) was started

1979-1990 - The years we were still ignorant about the existence of Ultimate Frisbee

1991 - The year Crunch got started.

  • At the first practice four people showed up. Two guys (already playing ultimate for other teams) and two (new) girls of whom one is still playing (feb 2007): Tessel Hillenius.
  • We learned a lot, I'm sure, and we had a shirt.
Our first logo

Our first logo

The shirt logo also explains our name: Crunch, the sound of catching a disc in the mouth. The other (more true) reason behind our name is that our founding trainer and honorary member, Reggi Hensen (Red Lights), called the Dutch Frisbee Assocation (NFB) sometime in September of our first year to sign up a new team for the Dutch Indoor Competition. When asked what the name of the team was, the best thing he could come up with was the name of his favorite chocolate bar. Besides, when you play sports and the time is there to really perform (in the last part of the match) it is called “crunch time”.

  • First competition day we had trouble getting enough people on the line (2007/01/08: things haven't changed much).

1992 - The year we discovered wind and rain

  • In the outdoor competition we start in the 3rd division, with teams Vertigo1, Vertigo2, TOF, HULK2, Discmen, UFO3, DDT2, WAF3

1994 - The year Hargen got started

  • Two (2!) Crunch teams participate in the 93/94 indoor competition.
  • During the last game of the first half of the indoor competition, the lights turn off strictly at 17:00, while TOF and Crunch are still playing. The score is, somewhat unexpectedly, in favor of Crunch. This is just enough for Crunch to promote, while TOF was already certain of a spot. In the FLOW, Paul Hoogendoorn of Enschede accuses Crunch and TOF of having made a deal. Especially the form in which is does this - a 'true fairy tail' about butterflies competing for a position on the biggest bush - is not much appreciated. In the end one can hardly fault Crunch or TOF for the light being turned of in Hengelo, and Crunch does move up.
  • The Crunch HUT (Hargen Ultimate Toernooi) is started. It is affectionally known as 'Hargen' (except by those who live in Hargen I guess, who would find that confusing). Main Man is Martin Louwe, who lives nearby. The tournament is an addition to the existing Hargen aan Sail tournament, which already features Catamaran sailing and beach volleyball.
  • Oscar Hollander becomes treasurer of Crunch

2001 The year of 10th birthday & new shirts & 3 outdoor teams & 1st at NBK & Spirit for Crunch2 and...

  • Crunch celebrates its 10th anniversary (with Crunchers past and present) with a (very cold) beach tournament. Luckily we each get a warm hat/netwarmer/muff-thing. A trivia quiz is also played. The day is finished off with a chinese meal. At the end, waiting for the rain to stop, some play charades ('Which Crunchie am I now?') in the restaurant foyer.
  • A birthday is also a good reason for new shirts design. The logo was found on the web somewhere. A superhero named Captain Crunch.

2005 The year of 3 tournaments by Crunchies

  • Winter Outdoor becomes a regular.
  • Crunch hosts three successful tournaments: Windmill Windup and A*dam Hat, and let's not forget our regular Hargen Ultimate Tournament on the beach.
  • The A*dam Hat tournament is organized by Femke Schaap, Sebastiaan Jacobs and Raymond van Dijk. It features the amazing 'relaxfast', a breakfast with live DJ (Robert Kottman), pancackes made to order, loads of bubblewine, fresh fruit smoothies, cakes, scrambled and baked eggs, etc.
  • A points system, combined with promotion and demotion during the competition, is introduced in the Dutch competition. This makes it a bit more difficult to report the scores below. A team can become 1st in their division (say 1st division), but have less points than another team (which collected more points earlier in the competition). If that is the case, that other team is 1st overall. Positions named below are based on the points ranking. The position within the division is an indication of the position on the last play day.

2006 The year of our 15th anniversary

  • Dutch Frisbee Association starts Mixed Competition with two tournaments after summer.
  • Over the 2005/2006 Indoor season Crunch 2 makes it into the 1st division via a streak of wins and keeps its pants up.
  • Crunch celebrates its 15th anniversary with a scavenger hunt in the city and a very cool party at Strand West.
  • In the Right To Play tournament we see two teams from the new university Ultimate club in Amsterdam, NUTS.
  • The A**dam Hat tournament is a great party once again, but the second day is totally rained out (5 cm of water on the field), if that isn't enough lightning stops play as well. The remaining games are played doing the usual silly games.
