Crunching Tigers played their first tourney

Held on the guarded grounds of the European Patent Offices, Rijswijk
was the place to watch up-and-coming frisbee stars strut their stuff
over the weekend. The indoor tournament welcomed 6 teams from all
over the Netherlands and featured several spectacular plays worthy of
serious patent consideration.

The 2008 Crunching Tigers, represented by Francisca, Vincent, Paul
and myself/Brad and special support act Lennart, Maaike and Geert,
played their first match of the season against fellow Amsterdam'ers
NUTS. The Tigers had good flow, strong legs and a convincing victory.

Match 2 was against UFO from Utrecht. The Tigers really got on a roll
mid-way through and eventually drove the aliens back to their home
planet by a convincing 15-5 margin. UFO had 3 people with 2 weeks
experience and 1 with none. They had great spirit, and at the end of
the day won the tournament Spirit Award.

In Match 3 the Tigers fortunes shifted. The Gronical Dizziness from
Groningen were short on players, but long on talent. With no
substitutes, but plenty of chutzpah, Dizziness ran a solid offence
and played Tenacious D. The end result was a 7-12 Tiger loss.

Match 4 was electric. The Tigers built an early lead against foe
Force Electro. However, down the stretch the Tigers went a bit dark
surrendering four unanswered points. At the buzzer Electro scored a
dramatic tying point to the cheers of everyone in the gymnasium. In
overtime Electro withstood a blistering offensive Tiger drive and
eventually scored the winning point, with a final score of 13-14.

Match 5 was a competition Alfred Hitchcock would have enjoyed. The
Eindhoven Vertigo had already claimed the 2008 Right to Play
tournament victory before stepping to the line for their final match
of the day. Vertigo ran a smart offence and supported their efforts
with a deep bench. The Tigers started the match strong and took an
early lead that felt convincing. However, down the stretch the
strength of the Vertigo bench proved the ultimate decider. Fresh legs
carried them to a 10-12 victory.

Overall it was a great day for the Tigers! We played well, had fun
and finished 3rd place; taking home a prize of delicious waffle
cookies.
