Cakes at the Champions League of Ultimate Frisbee

After a great result at Regionals, The Cake went off to EUCF in Bruges with a slightly changed team: good old Cummings, surprise show-up Sachin and Jaap couldn't make Finals unfortunately. Instead Hans Lommen joined as pick up and some newer Cakes like Louis, Romeo and Dino were present as well. Our more or less official goal was to win two games. It was harder to predict a final ranking, but many hoped to finish somewhere not too far below half.

There were eight teams in the open Elite Division and another sixteen in the Challenger Division. The best teams of the Challenger Division played a cross-over game against the lowest teams in the Elite Division. Our first game was against Thebigez from Austria, a team we know. Sometimes they win, sometimes we win. We didn't play very well and the won 15-12. The second game we played against Brighton, which we haven't played against in recent years. The proved to be a very solid team with remarkable throws and a solid running game. They took half time very easily. In the second half we traded points, but when you're six points behind at half you still lose. The last game in the first pool was against Raging Seagulls, a Swedish team with the average age of 20. We were the stronger and more experienced team and we won 15-9, we'll hear from these guys in the future.

The next day Ultimate Vibration from Cergy, near Paris was our opponent, a team we see every year and they always win by a little. High time for a change! We started really well with two breaks early in the game. But just before half time they came back with three goals in a row. Right after half they made another break, but with a couple other breaks back we took the lead. It was a close game all the way to the end, but they turned out to be the better team again.

The next game was against another French team, Friselis, and the game was very similar to the one against Vibration: many breaks from both sides and in the end we lost only by a couple of points. This got us in the 24-21 bracket. We won both of our last two games, first against LOL of Hungary, and on Sunday against EMO of the UK, which was a very strong closing effort by the Cakes. In the end we won three games but ended lower than we hoped. We're looking forward to get some revenge next year.

In a very exciting final Flying Angels won on universe point from Clapham for all the marbles! Bad Skid, a team with only very young players from Germany, surprised by working their way from the Challenger Division all the way up to the fifth place, beating Freespeed in their lat game. (go youth ultimate!) Another surprise was Gentle. They didn't qualify at first, but with a couple of reinforcements they worked up to the eleventh place. In their last game the won against 7 Schwaben who were the first seed from our qualification region (Germany Denmark Belgium Holland).
